How EssayLens works
EssayLens is a planning tool, not a crystal ball. Here is exactly what data we use, how the estimates are built, and where the honest limits are. We would rather be trusted than impressive.
Two principles run through everything. First, we critique, we never rewrite: your essay stays your words. Second, we show our work: every estimate is anchored to figures the colleges and the government actually publish, not to a black box.
We build on primary sources, not hearsay:
- The Common Data Set (CDS). Most U.S. colleges publish a CDS each year. Section C7 states how much the school weighs each part of your application, from grades and rigor to the essay, activities, and character, on a scale of very important, important, considered, or not considered. That is the backbone of how we model each school.
- IPEDS and the College Scorecard. The U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard and IPEDS provide admit rates, SAT and ACT ranges, cost of attendance, and average net price by family income.
- Each school's own figures for deadlines, essay prompts, test policy, and aid, checked against the school's admissions and financial-aid pages.
For each school, we compare your academic profile (GPA, course rigor, class rank, and test scores where they count) against that school's selectivity and score range. We then layer in the nonacademic factors, your essays, activities, and any hooks, each weighted by how much that specific school says it values them in its Common Data Set. A school that reads holistically rewards a standout essay far more than a numbers-driven one does. We adjust for major selectivity, in-state status at public universities, and early application plans, then anchor the result to the school's published admit rate. The output is a realistic percentage and a band, not a guarantee.
The reader scores your draft across seven dimensions the way an admissions officer reads, hook, fit, specificity, voice, structure, insight, and mechanics, and returns your top fixes and a cliche check. It never rewrites your words, and we do not store your essay text.
Admissions is holistic and partly unpredictable, and published data lags reality by a cycle. Our numbers are estimates for planning a balanced list, not offers. Always confirm details with the school and run its official net price calculator and the FAFSA or CSS Profile for your real cost.

No calculator can predict a holistic admissions decision, and any tool that gives you a hard number is overconfident. EssayLens is built to be honest about that: it weights your profile against each school's published admissions factors and admit rate to give a realistic band (safety, target, reach), not a promise. Treat it as a planning guide for building a balanced list, not a verdict.
Where does EssayLens get its data?
From primary sources: each college's Common Data Set (which publishes how heavily the school weighs every part of the application), and federal data from IPEDS and the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard for admit rates, test-score ranges, cost of attendance, and net price by family income.
Does EssayLens write my essay for me?
No. The essay reader critiques and scores your draft the way a sharp admissions officer would, then points to specific fixes. It never rewrites your words. Your essay stays yours.
Do you store my essay?
No. We do not store your essay text. The reader analyzes your draft to generate feedback and keeps only anonymized, aggregate data such as word count and scores.
