What Cornell rewards

Cornell asks first-year applicants for two supplemental essays: one shared community essay capped at 350 words that every applicant answers, plus one college-specific essay written to the particular undergraduate college or school you apply to. Most college essays run 650 words (CALS is 500, Human Ecology is around 600, and Engineering swaps the single essay for a set of short answers). The supplement is required for everyone, and as of fall 2026 entry Cornell is no longer test-optional, so SAT or ACT scores are now mandatory.

The core challenge is that Cornell is really eight colleges under one name. The shared essay wants the person behind the application, while the college essay wants proof that you chose this college and this major on purpose. Strong applicants treat them as two different jobs and never let one bleed into the other.

01Specific belonging over abstract identity. The community essay rewards a real group you actually move through, not a category you happen to fall into. Cornell wants to see how a particular community changed the way you think or act, with detail only an insider would know.

02Fit with one college, not the brand. Cornell does not want a generic love letter to an Ivy. The college essay rewards applicants who can name the major, the kind of work it involves, and why this specific school is where they want to do it. Vague enthusiasm reads as a copy-paste.

03Evidence of doing, not just wanting. Saying you are passionate about animal science or labor relations means little. Cornell rewards a track record: the project you built, the class that hooked you, the problem you kept circling back to. Show the wanting through action.

04Intellectual curiosity with a direction. Especially in Arts and Sciences, Cornell prizes a mind that asks questions. But curiosity without a destination feels scattered. The best essays pair genuine openness with a clear sense of what you want to chase and why.
