HKUST / Interview
The HKUST interview
Interview by invitation, and it carries moderate weight in the decision. Here is how it works and how to prepare.
Interview by invitation
By-invitation online interview, ~20-40 min, conducted by HKUST admissions staff or faculty; only arranged for select programs or borderline applicants , most applicants receive no interview
How to prepare for HKUST
- If invited, the interview is conducted online via video call , treat it as a formal academic meeting, not a casual chat; dress professionally and prepare a quiet, well-lit space.
- HKUST is intensely focused on STEM and quantitative rigor; be ready to discuss your academic interests, specific coursework, and why you chose your particular program (e.g. Computer Science, Quantitative Finance).
- Not being invited does not hurt your application , for most programs, particularly Engineering, interviews are optional and only arranged when the admissions team wants clarification, so absence of an invitation is normal.
- If you are not interviewed, demonstrate interest through a sharp, specific personal statement that ties your background directly to HKUST's research strengths or industry partnerships in Hong Kong.
Practice before the real thing
Rehearse real admissions-interview questions and get an honest read on your answers, what an interviewer hears, where you sound generic, and what to sharpen. We coach you; we never script you.
