So pick your topic with that filter in mind. Among the moments you could write about, lean toward the one where you noticed another person, took responsibility, or grew through serving rather than winning. Then write it small and concrete. The applicant who describes one tutoring session that went sideways, in real detail, will out-perform the one who lists three leadership titles every time.
Mistakes that sink Marquette essays
There is no Why Marquette prompt for first-year applicants. The Common App essay goes to every school on your list, so naming Marquette in it reads as a copy-paste error. Show fit through who you are, not through the school's name.
Some students hold back their strongest story expecting a Why us box later. There is not one. Put your single most revealing moment in the personal statement.
A perfectly told anecdote that ends with no insight feels hollow. Spend your last third on what the moment changed in how you see things. Marquette is reading for reflection, not just events.
Forced inspiration and exaggerated struggle read as performance. A small, honest, specific story beats a grand one you do not quite mean.
