The week before our regional science fair, the sensor at the heart of my project, a cheap turbidity meter for testing well water, stopped reading anything but zeros. I had three days. My data was gone. 1My first instinct was panic, then blame: bad sensor, bad luck. But I had built the thing, so I started where you start, by checking my own work first. 2I had soldered a connection too close to another and bridged them with a whisker of solder I could only see under my phone's macro lens. The board was fine. I was the bug. 3Rebuilding left me only enough time to collect a smaller dataset, so I changed the project. Instead of claiming I had mapped contamination across forty wells, I wrote honestly about the eight I could test, and about the failure itself, including the photo of the bad joint. I was sure a thinner project would lose. 4It did not. A judge told me the troubleshooting section was the most real thing she had read all day, because it showed I understood my own instrument rather than trusting its number. 5What I learned is that the useful question is rarely "what broke." It is "what did I do." Owning the mistake was faster than blaming the hardware, and less embarrassing than presenting clean data I never actually trusted.6
