I learned about Mount Holyoke from a database of old radio recordings. I write a clean paragraph and then fall apart the moment someone asks me to defend it. A place that has built infrastructure around the unglamorous middle of learning, the defending, the revising, the saying it again better, is a place that takes seriously the part I most need to grow.3I see the same conviction in the Nexus minors, which let a student braid a thematic concentration through an existing major, and in the requirement that pushes you into a multicultural perspective rather than letting you orbit only the familiar. None of this is decoration. It is a college that decided what intellectual seriousness looks like and then built the rooms for it.4I do not want to be impressed by a college. I want to be put to work by one. Mount Holyoke seems to have spent two centuries deciding that the work of women and nonbinary students is worth recording, defending, and keeping. I would like to add four years of my own to the archive, and to be the kind of student who is still worth listening to when someone digitizes it eighty years from now.5
