Oberlin / Interview
The Oberlin interview
Optional interview, and it carries minor weight in the decision. Here is how it works and how to prepare.
Optional interview
Optional alumni or admissions-staff interview, ~20-30 min, conducted virtually; slots open on a first-come basis and fill quickly each cycle
How to prepare for Oberlin
- Sign up early , Oberlin's interview slots are limited and consistently fill before the application deadline, so check the portal as soon as you begin your application.
- Treat the conversation as genuinely two-way: Oberlin values intellectual curiosity and social engagement, so come with thoughtful questions about campus life, the Conservatory connection, or specific programs.
- Emphasize what you will contribute to Oberlin's distinctive community , cooperative values, activism, arts, or interdisciplinary work , rather than generic accomplishments.
- Because the interview is informational rather than evaluative in weight, a missed or unavailable slot will not hurt you; focus energy on your essays and demonstrating fit through other channels if slots run out.
Practice before the real thing
Rehearse real admissions-interview questions and get an honest read on your answers, what an interviewer hears, where you sound generic, and what to sharpen. We coach you; we never script you.
