Peking supplemental essays
All 1 required prompt for 2026 entry, each with its own deep guide: what it is really asking, annotated examples, and what to avoid.
The single most useful insight is that PKU's personal statement is a statement of purpose, not a coming-of-age story. Aim to spend roughly 70 to 80 percent of it on your subject: what drew you to it, what you have actually done (projects, competitions, reading, prior coursework), and precisely what you want to study at Peking and why PKU is the place for it. The remaining fraction can establish who you are and why China and Chinese-language study make sense for your goals. If a sentence does not move your academic case forward or explain your fit with PKU, cut it.
Treat the self-introduction video as a paired document, not an afterthought. It is your chance to show spoken language ability, composure, and genuine motivation in a way text cannot. Plan it like a short, sincere talk: who you are, why this field, why PKU, delivered clearly. If your route requires HSK 6, even a few confident sentences in Chinese in the video reinforce the readiness your statement claims on paper.
Mistakes that sink Peking essays
A lyrical narrative about a formative childhood moment, with the subject barely mentioned, misreads the genre. PKU reviewers want your academic motivation and fit, not a Common App essay reused. Lead with why you want to study this field at Peking.
Praising China broadly, or listing reasons to study abroad generally, wastes the statement. Name the program, the academic strengths, and what specifically you want from PKU. Specificity is the whole point.
Failing to address how you will manage Chinese-language study or life in Beijing leaves a gap reviewers notice. Show readiness with evidence, such as HSK progress, prior Chinese study, or time spent in China, rather than a promise to figure it out.
Because there is no strict public word count, some applicants overwrite. Long, decorative statements bury the evidence. Keep it tight, concrete, and organized so a busy reader can see your case at a glance.
Peking essay FAQ
Does Peking University require an essay for international undergraduate applicants?
Yes. International undergraduates must submit one personal statement, written in Chinese or English, through PKU's portal at studyatpku.com. You also submit a self-introduction video, two recommendation letters, and a mandatory Commitment Letter. This applies whether you take the Entrance Examination route or the Admission Without Written Examination route.
Do American applicants apply to Peking through the Common App or UCAS?
No. Peking University does not use the US Common App or the UK UCAS system. Americans and all other international applicants apply directly through PKU's own online portal at studyatpku.com, choosing either the Entrance Examination route or the Without Written Examination route.
What is the Peking University personal statement and how long should it be?
It is closer to a statement of purpose than a US personal essay. It should explain why you want to study your chosen subject at PKU, what you have done to prepare, and how you will handle Chinese-language study. PKU provides a template and does not publish a strict word limit, so aim for a focused statement of roughly 600 to 900 words.
What are the Peking University application deadlines for 2026 entry?
The Entrance Examination route runs from January 1 to February 28, 2026 (Beijing time), with the written test in late March. The Without Written Examination route has two rounds: Round 1 from December 19, 2025 to February 28, 2026, and Round 2 from June 12 to July 10, 2026. The application fee is 800 RMB.
What scores do I need to apply without the written exam?
PKU's published thresholds include SAT 1400 or higher with three AP results of 4 or above, an IB Diploma with a total of 36 or more, A-Levels with no grade below ABB, or ACT 30 or above with writing. All applicants also need HSK 6 with a score of at least 210 for Chinese proficiency.
How selective is Peking University for international students?
International undergraduate admission ran at roughly 15% based on 2023 figures, far more open than the domestic gaokao route but still highly competitive. PKU is ranked around #23 in the world and #2 in Asia, so the personal statement and video matter for separating strong applicants.
