The single most useful move is to treat the three prompts as one coordinated set, not three separate essays. Prompt 1 (opportunities at Purdue) is about the place. Prompts 2 and 3 (your major, then your alternate major) are about the fit between you and a specific field at a specific campus. Plan them together so they do not repeat, and so your primary and alternate majors tell a coherent story about how you think rather than two random picks.
Because you have only 250 words per answer, spend almost none of it on generic praise. Open with something only you would write, a specific project or moment, then connect it to a named Purdue resource. For the alternate-major essay, do not treat it as a throwaway. Readers notice when an alternate is plausible and connected to the primary (say, materials engineering as a backup to mechanical) versus a random second choice that signals you just want in anywhere.
Mistakes that sink Purdue essays
Every applicant knows Purdue is strong in engineering and CS. Reputation is not a reason. Replace any sentence that could appear in a brochure with a specific course, lab, professor's work, or club you actually want to join.
The third prompt is real. An alternate that connects logically to your primary (or to the same campus resources) reads as thoughtful. A random unrelated backup reads as 'I will take anything,' which weakens both essays.
With three 250-word answers, repetition is obvious. Decide which essay carries the campus story, which carries your intellectual fit, and which carries the alternate, and keep them distinct.
Prompts 2 and 3 ask about your campus location (West Lafayette or Indianapolis). Name the one you chose and give a real reason tied to your major or goals. Skipping it leaves the answer feeling half-finished.
