Union supplemental essays
All 1 required prompt for 2025-2026, each with its own deep guide: what it is really asking, annotated examples, and what to avoid.
Because Union asks for nothing school-specific, do not waste this essay trying to prove you love Union. You cannot show fit through a checklist that does not exist. Instead, show fit by being the kind of thinker Union wants in a seminar of fifteen people: curious, specific, willing to sit with a hard question. The committee will infer fit from how your mind moves on the page.
Then use the channels Union does give you. The optional Research Interest Form is where "Why Union" energy belongs, so if you have a genuine research interest, name it there in plain language. That frees your personal statement to be a real story rather than a pitch. One essay, one job: make a stranger feel like they know you and want you in the room.
Mistakes that sink Union essays
There is no supplement, and bending your personal statement into a love letter to Schenectady will read as forced. Save school-specific enthusiasm for the Research Interest Form and let the main essay be about you.
Some students relax when they see one essay and submit something generic. Union sees the opposite: with nothing else to differentiate you, a flat personal statement hurts more here than at a school with five supplements.
The committee already has your activities list. An essay that re-narrates your accomplishments wastes the one space built for the parts of you a transcript cannot show.
"And that taught me the value of perseverance" deflates a good story. Union readers want a real, slightly surprising landing that feels earned by the specific thing you described.
