Kentucky supplemental essays

All 2 required prompts for 2025-2026, each with its own deep guide: what it is really asking, annotated examples, and what to avoid.

Strategy, read this first

The strategic move at Kentucky is to recognize where the leverage actually is. Because there is no required general supplement, your Common App essay does almost all the work for admission, and you should treat it as a UK-quality essay even though UK never names a prompt. Do not coast on it because the school is not highly selective. A vivid, specific personal statement is also exactly what reads well to scholarship and honors committees, who see the same essay.

If you have any interest in the Lewis Honors College or merit money, write the 500-word "common good" essay and write it early. The honors deadline is December 1, the same as Early Action, and applying by June 1 gives you the strongest scholarship consideration. The honors essay is your one chance to show UK that you understand its mission as a Commonwealth flagship, so resist the urge to recycle a generic community-service paragraph. Anchor it in one real place and one real action, and let your own background explain why that place matters to you.

01 Lewis Honors College / Scholarship Essay 500 words maximum This essay is required only for applicants to the Lewis Honors College and for competitive academic scholarships, not for general first-year… 02 Common App Personal Statement 650 words maximum This is the standard Common App personal statement, and at UK it is the single most important essay because there is no general supplement. …

Mistakes that sink Kentucky essays

Do not define the common good in the abstract

Sentences like the common good means everyone benefiting tell the reader nothing. Define it through a single example: a specific need you saw in a specific community and why solving it serves more than one person.

Do not skip the second half of the prompt

The honors prompt has two parts: what you consider the common good, AND how you will use your experiences, challenges, uniqueness, and intellect to contribute. Many drafts answer only the first half. Spend real words on what you will actually do.

Do not treat the Common App essay as low-stakes

Because UK admits most applicants, students sometimes phone in the personal statement. But the same essay feeds scholarship and honors review. A flat essay can cost you money even when it does not cost you admission.

Do not force a Kentucky connection you do not have

The prompt says your community, as you define it. If you have never set foot in Kentucky, write honestly about the community you know. A forced love letter to a state you have never visited reads as hollow.
