York / Interview
The York interview
Interview by invitation, and it carries moderate weight in the decision. Here is how it works and how to prepare.
Interview by invitation
By invitation for select courses only (Medicine via Hull York Medical School, Education, Social Work); typically a panel or structured interview, ~30-60 min, on campus or virtual; most courses have no interview
How to prepare for York
- Most York courses make offers based solely on your UCAS personal statement and predicted grades , no interview stage , so invest heavily in a precise, course-specific personal statement.
- If you are applying to Medicine (Hull York Medical School), Education, or Social Work, an interview or additional assessment is part of the process; check the specific course page for format, as Medicine uses a structured multi-mini or panel interview.
- For interview-eligible courses, York values academic curiosity and reflective thinking over rehearsed answers , be ready to discuss your personal statement honestly and engage with a scenario or problem you haven't prepared.
- Show genuine interest in York's specific strengths (e.g. its department research themes, interdisciplinary approach, campus community) rather than generic university selling points.
Practice before the real thing
Rehearse real admissions-interview questions and get an honest read on your answers, what an interviewer hears, where you sound generic, and what to sharpen. We coach you; we never script you.
