Here is the surprising part: Bates College does not require a supplemental essay for 2025-2026. There is no "Why Bates," no community question, no short-answer grid. For first-year applicants, the written application is essentially your Common App personal statement (650 words), plus the short activity and honors fields everyone fills out. Bates also offers an optional arts supplement for music, theater, art, dance, film, and creative writing, but that is portfolio material, not an essay.

That absence is the whole strategy. When a school asks you nothing extra, it is telling you that the one essay you already wrote has to do all the work. Bates is test-optional (and has been for thirty years), highly selective at roughly 15 percent, and known for reading applications closely and holistically. So the bar for your personal statement is higher here than at a school where a strong supplement can rescue a generic main essay. Strategy, read this first

Because there is no supplement, do not waste a single line of your personal statement signaling that you researched Bates. That is the opposite of what Bates is asking. The school deliberately removed the "Why us" essay, so a paragraph quietly bragging about their Mount David Summit or short-term courses reads as misreading the assignment. Bates wants the essay to be about you, fully, with no performance of fit.

The move that works: write the most specific, most honest personal statement you can, and pressure-test it against one question, "could only I have written this?" If a stranger could swap in their own name and the essay still works, it is too generic for a school this selective with nothing else to judge you on. Concrete nouns, a moment with a date and a place, and a genuine shift in how you see things. That is the entire game at Bates.

The task: write one 650-word essay that shows Bates who you are, with no separate Why Bates question to carry your interest in the school.

Why they ask it

With no supplement and a test-optional, holistic read, this is the single best window Bates gets into your voice, your judgment, and how you think. They removed every other essay on purpose, which puts unusual weight on this one. It is doing the job of a personal statement and a fit essay at once, except Bates wants you to answer it by being yourself, not by flattering them.

Start small

Find the smallest true moment that changed how you see something, then build outward from it rather than starting big. Bates trusts a quiet scene more than a grand thesis.

Inventory what only you notice

List the things only you would notice (a smell, a phrase your grandmother repeats, a habit you have) and write toward the one that cracks open into something larger.

Trace a changed belief

Think about a belief you held at 14 and no longer hold, and trace what moved you. That arc is reflection, which is exactly what Bates rewards.

Mistakes that sink Bates essays

✕ Do not sneak in a Why Bates paragraph

Bates chose not to ask. Tacking on lines about how much you love their campus or curriculum signals that you do not understand the application you are filling out. Keep the essay about you.

✕ Do not treat the missing supplement as less work

Fewer essays does not mean lower stakes. It means one essay has to be excellent. Give your personal statement the time you would have spent on three supplements somewhere else.

✕ Do not narrate a resume

Bates reads holistically and already has your activities list. An essay that recaps your accomplishments wastes the one space built for voice and reflection. Pick one small thing and go deep.

✕ Do not perform vulnerability you do not feel

Trauma-as-strategy reads as hollow to experienced readers. Bates rewards honesty, which sometimes means an ordinary subject handled with unusual thought. Write the true thing, not the dramatic thing.
