Bates supplemental essays
All 1 required prompt for 2025-2026, each with its own deep guide: what it is really asking, annotated examples, and what to avoid.
Because there is no supplement, do not waste a single line of your personal statement signaling that you researched Bates. That is the opposite of what Bates is asking. The school deliberately removed the "Why us" essay, so a paragraph quietly bragging about their Mount David Summit or short-term courses reads as misreading the assignment. Bates wants the essay to be about you, fully, with no performance of fit.
The move that works: write the most specific, most honest personal statement you can, and pressure-test it against one question, "could only I have written this?" If a stranger could swap in their own name and the essay still works, it is too generic for a school this selective with nothing else to judge you on. Concrete nouns, a moment with a date and a place, and a genuine shift in how you see things. That is the entire game at Bates.
Mistakes that sink Bates essays
Bates chose not to ask. Tacking on lines about how much you love their campus or curriculum signals that you do not understand the application you are filling out. Keep the essay about you.
Fewer essays does not mean lower stakes. It means one essay has to be excellent. Give your personal statement the time you would have spent on three supplements somewhere else.
Bates reads holistically and already has your activities list. An essay that recaps your accomplishments wastes the one space built for voice and reflection. Pick one small thing and go deep.
Trauma-as-strategy reads as hollow to experienced readers. Bates rewards honesty, which sometimes means an ordinary subject handled with unusual thought. Write the true thing, not the dramatic thing.
Bates essay FAQ
How many supplemental essays does Bates require for 2025-2026?
Zero. Bates does not require any supplemental essay for first-year applicants in 2025-2026. Your only required essay is the Common App personal statement (650 words). Bates also offers an optional arts supplement, but that is a portfolio of creative work, not a written essay.
Is there a Why Bates essay?
No. Bates deliberately does not ask a Why Bates question. Do not add one into your personal statement either, since the school is signaling that it wants the essay to be about you, not about them.
How long is the Bates essay?
The Common App personal statement is capped at 650 words, and that is the essay Bates reads. There is no shorter Bates-specific short answer to write.
Is Bates test-optional?
Yes. Bates has been test-optional for about three decades and remains test-optional for 2025-2026. The SAT and ACT are optional for all applicants, which puts more weight on your essay and overall application.
What are the Bates application deadlines for 2025-2026?
Early Decision I is November 15, 2025 (notification by December 20). Early Decision II and Regular Decision both close January 10, 2026, with Regular Decision notification by April 1, 2026.
How hard is it to get into Bates?
Quite hard. The Class of 2029 saw roughly a 15 percent acceptance rate from about 9,960 applications for an enrolled class of 496. With no supplement and optional testing, your personal statement matters a great deal.
