Treat the 200-word academic essay as your single best chance to prove you have done your homework on Emory specifically. For the choose-one short answer, pick the prompt that lets you tell a story you actually have, not the one that sounds most impressive. The community and cultural-awareness prompts in particular reward a small, true moment over a grand mission statement. Open inside a specific scene, show what you did, and end on what shifted in you or around you. With 150 words you want one clear story, not three rushed ones.
Mistakes that sink Emory essays
The academic prompt asks about academic areas at Emory, not the campus vibe or the weather in Atlanta. Anchor it in subjects, programs, and courses you could only find at Emory, and skip the rankings and prestige talk.
All four options are weighted equally. Choosing the service prompt because it sounds noble, when you have no real story for it, produces a flat essay. Choose the prompt where you have a specific memory to draw on.
At 150 and 200 words, lines like 'A community I have been a part of is...' burn space. Drop straight into a scene or a specific claim and trust the reader to remember the prompt.
These essays should add something new. If your whole short answer just recaps your activities list in paragraph form, the reader learns nothing. Show a moment, a change of mind, or a detail that the rest of your application never reaches.
