What Emory rewards

Emory asks for two short supplemental essays on top of your Common App personal statement. The first is a 200-word response about the academic areas you want to explore at Emory. The second is a 150-word reflection where you choose one of four get-to-know-you prompts about community, cultural awareness, service, or navigating disagreement. Both are tight, so every sentence has to earn its place.

Emory is test-optional for 2026-2027, which means your writing matters more than usual. The challenge here is not length but specificity: with so few words, vague answers about loving learning or wanting to help people disappear into the pile. The students who stand out name actual courses, actual moments, and actual people, and they sound like real seventeen-year-olds rather than press releases.

01Intellectual specificity. Emory wants to see that you have looked closely at what it offers. The academic essay rewards students who name particular programs, courses, professors, or interdisciplinary paths and connect them to a genuine curiosity, not a generic love of a subject.
02Community and contribution. Three of the four short-answer options circle around how you show up for others. Emory values students who do not just belong to communities but improve them, and who can describe their impact concretely rather than abstractly.
03Self-awareness over achievement. These prompts are reflective, not resume bullets. Emory rewards applicants who can explain how an experience changed their thinking, what they learned, or where they were wrong, instead of simply listing accomplishments.
04Authentic voice. In 150 words there is no room to perform. Emory responds to honest, grounded writing that sounds like you talking, with a real detail or two that no one else could have written.
