Hampshire supplemental essays

All 2 required prompts for 2025-2026, each with its own deep guide: what it is really asking, annotated examples, and what to avoid.

Strategy, read this first

The single most useful move for the Hampshire supplement was to treat the word identity as an invitation to get small, not big. Weak versions of this essay tried to summarize an entire background in 500 words and ended up saying nothing. The strongest versions picked one concrete site of identity (the back room of a family restaurant, a grandmother's untranslatable saying, the swap meet table you ran on weekends) and let that one thing carry the meaning. Specificity was the whole game, because a reader remembers the chipped enamel pot, not the phrase my cultural heritage.

The second move was to spend real estate on the contribution half of the prompt. Most applicants front-loaded who they are and tacked on a rushed sentence about enriching the community. Flip that ratio. Show the reader a moment where your particular angle changed a room: a question you asked that nobody else would, a tradition you introduced, a way of seeing that you bring to a group. That is what told Hampshire you would be an active contributor on a self-directed campus, not just a thoughtful person.

Mistakes that sink Hampshire essays

Do not write a diversity essay in the abstract

Phrases like my unique background and diverse perspectives are placeholders, not content. Replace every abstract noun with a thing a reader could photograph. The prompt asked for factors that shaped you, so name them precisely.

Do not skip the contribution half

The prompt has two parts. If your draft is 480 words about who you are and 20 words about contributing to campus, you answered half the question. Give the contribution at least a third of the space and make it concrete.

Do not perform hardship for effect

Hampshire read holistically and valued honesty. You do not need a dramatic struggle to write a strong identity essay. A specific, true, ordinary thread beats a heightened story you do not actually own.

Do not ignore the closure reality

If you find this prompt on an old list, know that Hampshire is no longer accepting applications. Use this guide to sharpen an identity essay for a school that is open, and verify any institution's current status before you write.

Hampshire essay FAQ

Is Hampshire College still accepting applications for 2025-26?

No. In April 2026 Hampshire College announced it will permanently close following the Fall 2026 semester and is no longer enrolling new first-year students. Admitted-student deposits were being refunded, and the college set up transfer partnerships with nearby schools including Amherst, Mount Holyoke, Smith, and UMass Amherst. Always confirm the latest at hampshire.edu/closure-information.

How many supplemental essays did Hampshire College require?

One. Hampshire asked a single optional 500-word supplemental essay about identity and community, in addition to the 650-word Common App personal statement. Because the school was test blind, the writing carried a lot of weight even though the supplement was labeled optional.

What was the Hampshire supplemental essay prompt?

The verbatim prompt was: Hampshire College seeks to create a diverse environment where many different voices and perspectives enliven and inform classroom discussion and campus culture. What are some factors that have contributed to your sense of identity, and how do you hope sharing your experiences will contribute to the campus community? The limit was 500 words.

Did Hampshire College require SAT or ACT scores?

No. Hampshire was test blind, meaning it did not consider SAT or ACT scores in any way for admission or financial aid. Your application rested on transcripts, recommendations, and especially your writing.

What were Hampshire's application deadlines?

In its final admitting cycles, Hampshire used Early Decision I on November 15, Early Action on December 1, Early Decision II on January 1, and Regular Decision on January 15. These are now historical, since the college is no longer accepting applications.

Can I still use this guide if Hampshire is closing?

Yes, as a model. The Hampshire identity prompt is a textbook example of a two-part diversity-and-community question, and the techniques here (lead with one concrete image, give real space to the contribution half) transfer directly to similar prompts at schools that are still open.
