The second move was to spend real estate on the contribution half of the prompt. Most applicants front-loaded who they are and tacked on a rushed sentence about enriching the community. Flip that ratio. Show the reader a moment where your particular angle changed a room: a question you asked that nobody else would, a tradition you introduced, a way of seeing that you bring to a group. That is what told Hampshire you would be an active contributor on a self-directed campus, not just a thoughtful person.

Pick one physical site where your identity lives (a room, a counter, a field, a vehicle) and let that place anchor the whole essay instead of a list of categories.
Find a habit or saying you inherited, then trace how you made it your own and what it lets you offer other people on a campus.
Recall a moment when your particular way of seeing changed a group conversation, then build outward from that scene to who you are.

- What is one object or place in your home that would tell a stranger something true about who you are, and why?
- What did you teach yourself or figure out on your own, with no grade attached, that you are quietly proud of?
- Describe a time your perspective shifted a group conversation. What did you say, and what changed?
- Could a reader draw a picture from at least one sentence? If every sentence is abstract, add a concrete image.
- Does the contribution half of the prompt get at least a third of your words and one specific action?
- Read it aloud: does it sound like you talking, or like a brochure? Cut any phrase you would never say out loud.
Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. (Choose one of the seven Common App prompts; this is the most commonly chosen.)
Because Hampshire was test blind and supplement-light, the Common App personal statement did most of the work of introducing you. - 3Specific failures make the success believable. The texture (stripped bolt, forty-minute drive) is what a reader remembers.
- 4Lands a transferable insight that reframes the anecdote as a way of operating, which is exactly what an open-ended academic model rewards.
- What is the one story you would tell to explain why you are the way you are?
- What is something you taught yourself, and what did the process reveal about how you work?
- Where in your life do you keep going after most people would stop, and why there?
- Does the essay open inside a specific scene rather than a general claim about yourself?
- Is there a real insight at the end that the anecdote actually earned, not a tacked-on moral?
- Does at least one sentence sound unmistakably like you and no one else?
Mistakes that sink Hampshire essays
Phrases like my unique background and diverse perspectives are placeholders, not content. Replace every abstract noun with a thing a reader could photograph. The prompt asked for factors that shaped you, so name them precisely.
The prompt has two parts. If your draft is 480 words about who you are and 20 words about contributing to campus, you answered half the question. Give the contribution at least a third of the space and make it concrete.
Hampshire read holistically and valued honesty. You do not need a dramatic struggle to write a strong identity essay. A specific, true, ordinary thread beats a heightened story you do not actually own.
