Michigan asks for two supplemental essays on top of the Common App personal statement. The first is a required community essay of 100 to 300 words about how you are prepared to contribute as a leader and citizen. The second is the Why Michigan essay, up to 550 words, about the specific college or school you are applying to. Michigan is test-optional.

The two essays do very different jobs, and applicants who blur them lose. The community essay is about you and the people and places that shaped you. The Why Michigan essay is the most demanding 'why us' in the top tier, 550 words is a lot of room, and Michigan uses it to filter out anyone who did not do real research. You apply to a specific undergraduate college (LSA, Engineering, Ross, and others), and the essay must speak to that exact school's curriculum and your fit with it.

Strategy, read this first

The Why Michigan essay is where this application is won or lost, because the 550-word ceiling gives you nowhere to hide. Do not write about Michigan in general. Write about the exact undergraduate college or school you selected, LSA versus Engineering versus Ross are different essays, and name real, specific things: a course, a sequence, a research center, a program, a professor's work, and connect each to evidence from your own life. The test is simple: if you could paste the essay into a Why Wisconsin or Why Illinois essay by swapping the name, it fails.

For the community essay, resist the urge to sound noble. Michigan wants to see how a real community shaped you and how that prepares you to contribute. Pick one specific community and one specific way it formed you, then point that forward: what you will bring to Ann Arbor because of it. In 300 words, one true story beats three abstractions about leadership.
