For the community essay, resist the urge to sound noble. Michigan wants to see how a real community shaped you and how that prepares you to contribute. Pick one specific community and one specific way it formed you, then point that forward: what you will bring to Ann Arbor because of it. In 300 words, one true story beats three abstractions about leadership.
Mistakes that sink Michigan essays
If the essay would work for any big state flagship with the name swapped, it fails. Name specific courses, programs, and traditions in your exact college.
You apply to LSA, Engineering, Ross, or another school. The Why essay must speak to that one, not to the University of Michigan as a whole.
The long limit is an invitation to go deep, not to pad. Every paragraph should add a specific reason and a specific connection to you.
It asks how you will contribute, not what you have won. Ground it in a real community and a real way it shaped you.
