Northwestern University
One required 300-word community essay plus optional short takes. Annotated examples.
What Northwestern rewards
Northwestern requires one supplemental essay of 300 words or fewer, plus a set of optional short-answer prompts you may answer up to two of, in 200 words or fewer each. The required essay is a background-and-community prompt: how the parts of your life have shaped the way you would engage with Northwestern. Northwestern is test-optional.
The word optional is misleading here. At a roughly 7% admit rate, the optional short answers are where you show specific fit and personality, and strong applicants treat at least one as expected. The best known is The Rock, a Northwestern tradition where students paint a campus boulder to promote events, causes, and Purple Pride. This guide focuses on nailing the required essay first, then using one short answer to prove you actually know Northwestern.
