What Northwestern rewards

Northwestern requires one supplemental essay of 300 words or fewer, plus a set of optional short-answer prompts you may answer up to two of, in 200 words or fewer each. The required essay is a background-and-community prompt: how the parts of your life have shaped the way you would engage with Northwestern. Northwestern is test-optional.

The word optional is misleading here. At a roughly 7% admit rate, the optional short answers are where you show specific fit and personality, and strong applicants treat at least one as expected. The best known is The Rock, a Northwestern tradition where students paint a campus boulder to promote events, causes, and Purple Pride. This guide focuses on nailing the required essay first, then using one short answer to prove you actually know Northwestern.

01Engagement, not just identity. The required essay asks how your background shapes how you will engage at Northwestern. The verb is engage. Push past who you are to what you will do.
02Specific Northwestern knowledge. The short answers reward applicants who know the place: a tradition, a program, the Evanston-to-Chicago corridor. Generic praise wastes a scarce 200 words.
03Interdisciplinary instinct. Northwestern prizes students who cross lines, arts and engineering, journalism and data. Showing a mind that connects fields fits the culture.
04Real voice in small spaces. 300 and 200 words punish padding. A vivid, specific, slightly playful answer beats a careful, generic one every time.
