Northwestern supplemental essays

All 2 required prompts for 2025-2026, each with its own deep guide: what it is really asking, annotated examples, and what to avoid.

Strategy, read this first

Spend your real effort on the required 300-word essay, and read the prompt literally: it asks how your background shapes how you see yourself engaging in Northwestern's community. Many applicants write a lovely paragraph about their identity and stop. The ones who stand out connect a specific piece of their background to a specific way they will show up on campus, academically, culturally, socially. The bridge from who you are to what you will do is the whole essay.

Then treat at least one optional short answer as required. The Rock prompt is a gift: what you would paint reveals what you care about and whether you know Northwestern's culture, in one image. Whichever you choose, get concrete and specific to Northwestern. With only 200 words, one precise idea tied to the actual place beats a broad statement that could apply anywhere.

In one image, it reveals what you care about, your sense of humor or conviction,…

Mistakes that sink Northwestern essays

Skipping the optional essays

At this admit rate, leaving the short answers blank reads as low interest. Answer at least one, and make it specific to Northwestern.

Stopping at identity

The required prompt asks how your background shapes how you will engage. An essay that only describes who you are misses the engagement half.

A generic Rock answer

Painting something vague or universal wastes the prompt. What you paint should reveal a specific passion and a real knowledge of Northwestern.

Reusing your Common App story

Northwestern reads the personal statement too. The supplement should add a new side of you, not retell the same one.
