Deadlines Early Decision Nov 1 (decisions by mid-Dec) · Early Action Nov 1 (decisions by Feb 15) · Regular Decision Jan 5 (decisions by Apr 1) Admit rate About 12.5% overall for the Class of 2030, from a record 82,118 applications. Early Decision is meaningfully friendlier (around 24%), and in-state applicants are admitted at far higher rates than out-of-state ones. Prompts verified from UVA’s official requirements

Here is the headline that changes your whole strategy: for 2025-26, UVA removed its general supplemental short answers. If you are applying to the College of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, or Kinesiology, you write no UVA-specific essay at all. Your only required writing is the Common App personal statement (650 words), and UVA reads it closely. The lone exception is the School of Nursing, which still asks one 300-word short answer about what drew you to nursing.

UVA stays test-optional for this cycle, so for most applicants the personal statement is doing the heavy lifting that a "Why UVA" essay used to do somewhere else. That is the core challenge here. With no supplement to show fit, you cannot lean on a separate essay to prove you belong at a place built on student self-governance and the honor system. The voice and specificity of your one main essay matter more than they would at a school with four extra prompts.

By the numbers · Figures reflect the Class of 2030 cycle as reported by UVA and the Cavalier Daily. Early Decision admitted roughly 24% of applicants; Early Action ran about 22.8% for Virginia residents and 9.8% out of state. Verify current data on UVA's admission site before relying on it.

What UVA rewards
A real voice over a polished resume

With the supplements gone, UVA is reading the Common App essay for the human behind the transcript. They reward writing that sounds like an actual seventeen-year-old thinking on the page, not a press release about leadership and resilience.

Self-governance and intellectual independence

UVA runs on student-led honor and a culture of taking ownership. Essays that show you acting on your own judgment, holding yourself to a standard, or following a curiosity without being assigned to land well here.

Specificity that only you could write

Because there is no second essay to fill in gaps, the personal statement has to be unmistakably yours. Concrete, sensory, oddly particular details beat broad themes every time.

Genuine, hands-on motivation (Nursing)

For Nursing applicants, UVA wants evidence that your interest comes from real contact with care and people, not an abstract wish to help. A specific moment beats a mission statement.

Strategy, read this first

The most useful thing to understand about UVA this year is that the absence of a supplement is not a break, it is a higher bar. At most peers your "Why us" essay quietly carries your fit. Here there is nowhere to say "I love that UVA students run their own honor system" or "I want to study X with Professor Y." So do not try to cram a fit pitch into your Common App essay. Instead, let the essay show the qualities UVA prizes, ownership, curiosity, integrity, through a story, and trust the rest of your application to signal interest.

If you are applying Early Decision, that binding commitment is your fit signal, and it is a strong one given the much friendlier ED admit rate. If you are a Nursing applicant, treat the 300-word short answer as your one chance to be specific about UVA's program, and spend your words on a single concrete experience rather than a tour of everything that ever made you consider nursing.

01
Common App Personal Statement 650 words
Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.
What it’s really asking

This is the Common App personal statement, and for 2025-26 it is the only required essay for UVA applicants outside Nursing. UVA does not add a 'Why us' prompt this cycle, so this essay is where the admissions reader meets you as a person. They are listening for a real voice, genuine curiosity, and the kind of self-direction and integrity UVA's student-run culture is built on. Note: any of the seven Common App prompt options works; the 'topic of your choice' option is shown here.

Why they ask it

With no supplement, this essay carries the qualitative weight of your file. UVA can see your grades and activities; the essay is where they decide whether you are someone who would thrive in a community that hands students real responsibility. A vivid, honest, specific essay does more for you at UVA this year than at almost any peer school.

Three ways in
A small recurring habit

Pick a ritual of yours and show what it quietly reveals about how you think and what you value.

A moment you changed your own mind

Describe a time you held a standard for yourself or revised a belief when no one was watching. This shows the ownership UVA prizes.

Something ordinary you know deeply

Take an everyday object, place, or task you understand more fully than anyone would expect, and let that expertise reveal you.

✕  Weak opening

“Ever since I was little, I have always been passionate about helping others and pushing myself to be the best version of myself.”

✓  Strong opening

“My grandmother's freezer held seventeen labeled containers of soup, and I had memorized which one meant she was worried about me.”

✦ Annotated example · The soup inventory. Written by EssayLens to teach, not a real applicant’s essay. Tap a highlighted line →
My grandmother's freezer held seventeen labeled containers of soup, and I had memorized which one meant she was worried about me. Lentil was ordinary. Matzo ball appeared after report cards.1The autumn she started forgetting names, the labels stopped matching the soup inside. I found chicken broth in a container marked 'beef stew, March,' and I understood before anyone said the word.2So I started keeping the inventory myself. Not to fix her, I couldn't, but because someone in that kitchen still needed to know what was true and where it lived.3I am not going to tell you this made me want to be a doctor. It made me want to be the person in the room who notices when the labels stop matching, and says so.4
  1. 1Opens on a hyper-specific, slightly funny image instead of a thesis. You immediately trust this narrator's eye.
  2. 2Lets a hard subject (a grandparent's decline) arrive through a concrete detail rather than a declaration. Shows, does not announce.
  3. 3This is the UVA move: quiet ownership and integrity, acting on your own judgment without being asked. It names a value through action.
  4. 4Subverts the cliche payoff. The reflection is honest and specific rather than a tidy career epiphany, which reads as mature.
Stuck? Start here
  • When have you quietly taken responsibility for something no one assigned to you?
  • What is a small, specific detail from your life that you understand better than most people would guess?
  • When did you change your own mind, and what did the old version of you believe?
Before you submit
  • Could only you have written this, or could a thousand applicants swap their name in?
  • Did you resist turning it into a 'Why UVA' pitch, since it goes to every school?
  • Is there at least one concrete, sensory detail in the first three sentences?
02
School of Nursing Short Answer 300 words
Describe a health care-related experience or another significant interaction that deepened your interest in studying Nursing.
What it’s really asking

This is the only UVA-specific supplement for 2025-26, and it is required only if you apply to the School of Nursing. UVA wants proof that your interest in nursing grew out of real contact with people and care, not an abstract desire to help. They are looking for a specific moment and what it taught you about the work nurses actually do.

Why they ask it

Nursing is relational and hands-on, and UVA's School of Nursing wants students who already understand that. A concrete experience signals that you know what you are choosing, which matters in a field where motivation gets tested early. It also lets you show empathy and judgment in action rather than just claiming them.

Three ways in
One person you helped care for

Center a single patient, resident, or family member whose care you were part of, even in a small role, and what it showed you.

A nurse doing the unglamorous work

Describe a moment you noticed a nurse doing something you had not realized was part of the job, and why it stuck with you.

Caregiving that fell to you

Write about a time you were responsible for someone's wellbeing and what surprised you about the actual work of it.

✕  Weak opening

“I have always wanted to be a nurse because I love helping people and making a difference in their lives.”

✓  Strong opening

“The CNA did not check the chart first. She checked whether Mr. Alvarez had eaten, then turned the TV to the right channel, then drew his blood.”

✦ Annotated example · What the order taught me. Written by EssayLens to teach, not a real applicant’s essay. Tap a highlighted line →
The CNA did not check the chart first. She checked whether Mr. Alvarez had eaten, then turned the TV to the right channel, then drew his blood. I was sixteen and folding linens, and I had assumed nursing was the needle.1He flinched less for her than for anyone else on the floor. I started watching the order she did things in: comfort, then context, then the clinical part. The blood draw worked because everything before it had.2Now I notice it everywhere. The receptionist who learns a frightened kid's dog's name. The aide who warms a blanket without being asked. Care is mostly the setup; the procedure is the last step.3I want UVA's training because I already know the needle is the easy part, and the rest is the part worth getting right.4
  1. 1Drops the reader into a precise scene and a clear misconception. Sets up real learning instead of a thesis statement.
  2. 2Shows the applicant observing and reasoning, not just feeling. This is the judgment UVA's Nursing readers want to see.
  3. 3Generalizes the insight outward, proving the lesson stuck and matured beyond the single moment.
  4. 4Ties motivation directly to nursing and to UVA in one specific, earned line. No filler about passion or making a difference.
Stuck? Start here
  • What single health-care moment first made nursing feel real rather than abstract to you?
  • What did you watch a caregiver do that you had not expected to be part of the job?
  • When did you have to put someone else's comfort or safety ahead of your own plans?
Before you submit
  • Did you build the answer around one specific moment instead of listing experiences?
  • Does it show judgment or empathy in action rather than just claiming you have them?
  • Are you comfortably under 300 words with room for one concrete tie to nursing?

Mistakes that sink UVA essays

Do not write a hidden 'Why UVA' essay

Some applicants try to sneak fit language into the Common App essay because the supplement is gone. It reads as forced. The personal statement goes to every school on your list, so keep it about you, not about UVA's seminars or Rotunda.

Do not coast because there is 'less writing'

Fewer essays does not mean lower stakes. It means your one essay is more exposed. Give it the time you would have spent on four supplements.

Do not list experiences in the Nursing answer

Three hundred words disappears fast. Picking one health-care moment and rendering it vividly beats name-dropping every hospital volunteer shift and bandage you have touched.

Do not confuse old prompts for current ones

Plenty of guides still show UVA's retired short answers about favorite words or experiences that taught you something. Those are gone for 2025-26. Write to what is actually required now.

UVA essay FAQ

How many supplemental essays does UVA require for 2025-26?

For most applicants, zero. UVA removed its general supplemental short answers for 2025-26. If you apply to the College of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, or Kinesiology, your only required essay is the Common App personal statement. The School of Nursing is the single exception, with one 300-word short answer.

Wait, UVA really has no supplemental essay now?

Correct, for non-Nursing applicants. UVA's admissions office cut the supplement to ease the essay load on applicants who now apply to more colleges than ever. It is a real change for 2025-26, so ignore older guides that still list prompts about favorite words or meaningful experiences.

What is the UVA School of Nursing essay prompt and word limit?

Nursing applicants answer: 'Describe a health care-related experience or another significant interaction that deepened your interest in studying Nursing.' The limit is 300 words. Some guides cite 250; confirm the exact count in the Common App once you select the School of Nursing.

What are UVA's 2025-26 application deadlines?

Early Decision and Early Action are both November 1, and Regular Decision is January 5. ED decisions arrive by mid-December, EA by February 15, and RD by April 1. ED is binding and admits at a notably higher rate than EA or RD.

Is UVA test-optional for 2025-26?

Yes, UVA is test-optional for this cycle, so you may apply without SAT or ACT scores. Admitted students who submit scores tend to land in the 1410-1520 SAT range, but strong applications succeed without them.

If there is no supplement, what should my Common App essay focus on?

Make it unmistakably yours and resist hiding a 'Why UVA' pitch inside it, since it goes to every school. UVA reads it for voice, curiosity, and the self-direction and integrity its student-run honor culture is built on. Lead with a specific, concrete story.
