What ETH Zurich rewards

ETH Zurich does not work like the US Common App, and for bachelor admission it does not ask for an essay at all. Admission to an ETH bachelor program is decided on your school-leaving certificate and, for most international applicants, the ETH entrance examination, a real subject exam in mathematics, physics, chemistry and more that is conducted in German. The application goes through ETH's own eApply portal, not a centralized service, and ETH is blunt about extras: the official instructions say to not upload any letters of motivation, portfolios, distinctions or reference letters, because they "are not relevant for admission to Bachelor's studies and will not be considered."

So if you came here hoping to polish a personal statement for an ETH bachelor seat, the most useful thing we can tell you is to put that energy into your grades, your German (the bachelor is taught in German, with C1-level proficiency expected), and entrance-exam prep instead. Where your writing genuinely counts at ETH is later and adjacent: the statement of purpose and motivation letter for ETH master's programs, and the motivation essays for scholarships such as the Excellence Scholarship. This page coaches that writing, the kind ETH actually reads, in an honest, ETH-specific way.

01Evidence over narrative. ETH is an engineering and science school to its core. When it does read your writing, for a master's or scholarship, it wants concrete proof: courses you aced, a thesis topic, a lab or internship, a tool you built. Your childhood spark for the stars is not the point; the orbital-mechanics project you finished last semester is.
02Fit with a specific group or program. ETH rewards applicants who name the exact program, professor, or research group they want and explain why their background plugs in. Generic admiration for ETH's ranking reads as filler. Specificity reads as a candidate who has actually looked at the faculty page.
03Technical maturity and honesty. ETH values applicants who can describe what they do not yet know and how they plan to close the gap. A clear-eyed account of your weak module and your plan to strengthen it beats a flawless self-portrait that no admissions reader believes.
04Quantitative grounding. Whatever you claim, anchor it in numbers or a result: a dataset size, a measured improvement, a grade, a competition placement. ETH readers are scientists; they trust statements that could be checked.
