Deadlines Application window Rolling admissions: you can apply at any time of year · Practical timing for 2026 entry Apply by winter/early spring 2026; popular programs fill months ahead · Decision Committee decision communicated in writing after assessment and interview Admit rate IE University reports that over 80% of its students come from outside Spain, representing more than 140 countries. There is no official published undergraduate acceptance rate; third-party estimates cluster around 30-35% overall, with more competitive programs such as the BBA and Computer Science admitting at lower rates. Admission is decided holistically by a committee using the application, the admissions test, the online assessment, and the interview together. Prompts verified from IE University’s official requirements

IE University is a private Spanish university in Madrid and Segovia, and it does not use the US Common App. You apply through IE University's own online application, and the heart of the writing is a single personal essay (the "Express Yourself" piece) that you can submit in one of three formats: a written essay of roughly 250-650 words, a video of up to three minutes, or a presentation of up to ten slides. Alongside it you sit the IE University Admissions Test (ieGAT), an English-language reasoning test that can stand in for the SAT or ACT, complete a short online video and written assessment, and then do a personal interview.

The core challenge for American and international applicants is that no part of this looks like a 650-word Common App essay graded by a single reader. IE reads your writing as one signal inside a multi-stage, holistic process, so the essay has to do a specific job: show motivation, fit, and a real reason for choosing IE and your program. Because admission is rolling and first-come, first-served, timing matters as much as polish, and popular programs close months before the year begins.

By the numbers · IE University does not publish an official undergraduate acceptance rate. The 30-35% figure is an estimate from third-party guides and varies sharply by program (the BBA and Computer Science are more competitive). The international and countries figures come from IE University's own materials. Treat all selectivity numbers as directional, not official.

What IE University rewards
Genuine motivation for IE and the program

IE wants to see that you chose this university and this degree on purpose, not as a backup. The strongest essays name something specific about IE (its model, its international student body, a particular program structure) and connect it to where you are heading. Vague praise of Madrid or 'global business' reads as filler.

Personality and self-awareness, not a CV in prose

Your resume already lists your activities. The Express Yourself piece is where IE looks for the person: how you think, what you care about, how you handle a setback or a passion. They explicitly encourage creative essays and personal stories that show individuality. Re-listing achievements wastes the one place built for voice.

Communication and critical thinking

IE evaluates communication skills across the whole process, including the online video and written assessment. Whatever format you pick, structure matters: a clear point, evidence, and a reason it matters. Rambling charm without a spine does not land, and neither does a stiff, over-formal essay with nothing personal in it.

Fit with an entrepreneurial, international culture

IE leans into innovation, entrepreneurship, diversity, and the humanities, and over 80% of students come from outside Spain. Writing that shows initiative, comfort across cultures, or a habit of building things fits the place. You do not have to fake a startup; you do need to show you act, not just observe.

Strategy, read this first

The single most useful insight for IE is to treat the personal essay as an answer to "why you, why this program, why IE" rather than a generic life story. Because the application also includes a test, a recorded assessment, and an interview, you do not need the essay to carry everything. Use it to do one thing exceptionally well: make a specific, evidenced case that you and the program belong together. Pick the format that genuinely shows you best. A confident speaker may gain from the three-minute video; a sharp writer should usually write. Do not pick video just because it feels modern if you freeze on camera.

Then prepare for the rest as one connected story. The online assessment gives you only one take per question, so rehearse speaking your motivation out loud before you record. The interview will probe the same themes, so whatever you claim in the essay (a project, a book, a turning point) should be something you can talk about for five minutes without notes. Consistency across the essay, the assessment, and the interview is what a holistic committee rewards.

Express Yourself personal essay Written: ~250-650 words. Video: max 3 minutes. Presentation: max 10 slides.
The personal essay (often presented as 'Express Yourself') asks you to show who you are beyond your grades and resume, and to convey your motivation for IE University and your chosen program. You may submit it as a written essay of roughly 250-650 words, a video of up to three minutes, or a presentation of up to ten slides. IE explicitly encourages creative essays and personal stories that highlight your individuality.
What it’s really asking

IE is asking two things at once: who are you as a person, and why do you and this specific program belong together? They want personality, self-awareness, and concrete motivation, not a restatement of your transcript or a generic ode to studying abroad.

Why they ask it

Because the admissions test, online assessment, and interview cover reasoning and live communication, the essay is the one place you fully control the framing of yourself. It is where IE checks whether there is a real, specific reason behind your application and whether your voice matches the entrepreneurial, international culture they are building.

Three ways in
Start from one turning point

Find the single moment you started caring about your field, tell it concretely, and connect it to a feature of this IE program.

List what only IE offers

Write down three things IE genuinely gives you that your local options do not, then build the essay around the one most true for you.

Lead with action

Identify a project or problem you actually acted on, and use it to show how you think and what you would do with the degree.

✕  Weak opening

“Ever since I was a child, I have been passionate about business and dreamed of studying at a prestigious international university.”

✓  Strong opening

“I shut down my school's recycling fundraiser after three weeks because the numbers did not work, and that failure taught me more about business than any class had.”

I shut down my school's recycling fundraiser after three weeks because the numbers did not work. 1We were collecting cans enthusiastically and losing money on every bag we sold, and no amount of school spirit fixed a broken unit economics. 2That is when I stopped wanting to 'do business' and started wanting to understand it. I taught myself basic accounting, relaunched the drive with a sponsor instead of retail sales, and we cleared 1,400 euros for the local shelter. 3I am applying to IE's BBA because it treats business as something you build, not just study, and because a cohort drawn from more than a hundred countries is the environment where I learn fastest. I want to graduate able to launch the next idea without shutting it down in week three.4
  1. 1Opens on a specific failure, not a cliche passion claim. It signals self-awareness and earns attention immediately.
  2. 2Shows real analytical thinking in plain language, demonstrating the critical thinking IE evaluates across the whole process.
  3. 3Turns the failure into action and a concrete result, proving initiative rather than just claiming ambition.
  4. 4Names a specific reason for IE and the program, ties it back to the opening image, and closes with forward motion instead of summary.
Stuck? Start here
  • What is one thing you tried, failed at, and changed your mind about, and what did it teach you about your field?
  • What can this specific IE program give you that your local universities cannot, in concrete terms?
  • If an interviewer read your essay and asked 'tell me more about that,' which sentence would you most want them to point to?
Before you submit
  • Does the piece name something specific about IE and your program, not generic praise?
  • Does it show personality and a real moment, rather than re-listing your resume?
  • Could you talk about every claim in it for five minutes in your interview without notes?

Mistakes that sink IE University essays

Do not recycle a US Common App essay

A polished American personal-narrative essay about a grandparent or a sports injury can feel unmoored at IE, which wants motivation and fit, not just a moving story. Keep any narrative, but bend it toward why you want this program at this university. Cut the parts that exist only to sound profound.

Do not pick the flashiest format over your strongest one

Video and slides are allowed, but a weak three-minute video where you read a script stiffly is worse than a crisp 400-word essay. Choose the medium that actually shows your thinking and personality. Format is not a substitute for substance.

Do not be vague about why IE

Lines like 'IE is a prestigious global university' could be pasted into any application. Name something concrete: a specific program feature, the international makeup of the cohort, the entrepreneurial model. Specificity is the difference between motivation and flattery.

Do not treat the essay as separate from the assessment and interview

The video assessment and the interview revisit your motivation. If your essay claims a passion or project, be ready to defend it live, with detail, in one take. Contradicting yourself across stages is a fast way to look manufactured.

IE University essay FAQ

Does IE University require an essay?

Yes. IE University's undergraduate application includes a personal essay, sometimes labeled 'Express Yourself,' that you can submit as a written essay of roughly 250-650 words, a video of up to three minutes, or a presentation of up to ten slides. There is also a separate online assessment with video and written questions, plus an interview.

Do Americans apply to IE University through the Common App or UCAS?

No. IE University uses its own online application, not the US Common App and not the UK's UCAS. American and other international applicants apply directly through IE's portal, sit the IE University Admissions Test (or submit SAT/ACT), complete an online assessment, and do an interview.

What is the word limit for the IE University personal statement?

If you choose the written format, the personal essay runs roughly 250-650 words. If you prefer, you can instead submit a video of up to three minutes or a presentation of up to ten slides. Pick the format that shows you best, not the flashiest one.

What is the IE University Admissions Test?

It is IE's own English-language reasoning test (often called the ieGAT), assessing verbal, numerical, and logical reasoning, taken online in under two hours. It can replace the SAT or ACT, though IE also accepts those scores. School of Science and Technology applicants take an additional mathematics assessment.

When is the IE University application deadline for 2026 entry?

IE University uses rolling admissions, so you can apply at any time of year, and places are awarded first-come, first-served. There is no single fixed deadline, but popular programs fill months before the academic year starts, so applying in winter or early spring 2026 is far safer than waiting.

Is there an interview at IE University?

Yes. After the application, the admissions test, and the online video and written assessment, qualified candidates are invited to a personal interview, usually around 30 minutes and often by video. Expect questions about your motivation, your program choice, and the experiences you described in your essay.
